AirFit™ F30 CPAP Mask Review

January 11, 2019

The CPAP manufacturer, ResMed is out with a brand new full-face CPAP mask that many are calling "ground-breaking" and a “game-changer”! The AirFit™ F30 launched first across Canada in late 2018. It will be available in the United States and other select countries in 2019.  The F30 is the little brother to the super-popular AirFit™ F20 and ResMed is putting a lot of faith in this Sleep Apnea mask - and for good reasons.

The AirFit F30 has been completely redesigned and sits lower on the face to provide a perfect seal.     The AirFit F30 has been completely redesigned and sits lower on the face to provide a perfect seal.

The F30 lower profile CPAP mask is not just smaller, it’s completely redesigned. It sits lower on the face, with an ultra-compact nasal cushion that covers just the tip of the nose to the bottom lip. The cushion style claims to provide a secure fit and a perfect seal.

Forget the days of clunky masks that go from your chin to the bridge of your nose, blocking your view and leaving you with irritation, straplines and redness in the morning.  The soft, flexible frame and buttery-soft nasal padding keep your nose from getting squished as you sleep.

The headgear of the AirFit F30 mask was designed to leave fewer marks and is perfect for side-sleepers.       The headgear of the AirFit F30 mask was designed to leave fewer marks and is perfect for side-sleepers.

The universal, one-size adjustable headgear is flexible, plush and designed to reduce tightness while delivering stability and extra softness for comfort. The minimal face coverage results in fewer marks and creases by morning, it reduces the feeling of claustrophobia and even lets you wear your reading glasses.  And side-sleepers rejoice!  It works for you, too.
According to studies, up to 60% of CPAP patients preferred the F30 and believed it gave them a more reliable seal. According to studies, up to 60% of CPAP patients preferred the F30 and believed it gave them a more reliable seal.

When compared to top leading minimal contact CPAP masks available on the market, up to 80% of the users in a clinical study reported that AirFit™ F30 was much easier to use than other leading masks. Up to 60% of the patients reported that they have experienced a more stable fit and a more reliable seal with the AirFit™ F30.

Based on published performance studies, the AirFit™ F30 is a third quieter than other leading Sleep Apnea masks (Imagine a whisper or rustling leaves compared to the sound of a humming refrigerator).

An improved venting system called Quiet Air Vent System on the F30 has been designed to disperse exhaled air smoothly and evenly instead of jetting it out (as some masks do) making for a much quieter mask that helps keep bed partners sleeping quietly too.

The AirFit™ F30 is a beautiful creation. It's lightweight, modern, minimalist and has truly been redesigned. It has piqued many user's interests to see if it's worthy of all the hype. Reasons Why You Should Make Sleep A Priority This New Year

December 28, 2018

There is not a day that goes by where a colleague, a friend or family member don't complain they’re either exhausted, lacking sleep or too tired to function. I too am guilty of that! Unfortunately, most Canadian run on low-to-empty; and need to pump the brakes on this bad habit we call routine. To lead a healthier you this 2019, we need to satisfy 3 fundamentals - nutrition, physical activity and sleep. These 3 key factors along with weight and stress management all make up a healthy way to start the new year and lay an excellent groundwork for the rest of the year. Continue reading to learn why sleep should be the first area you concentrate on.

Quality and regularity

To improve your sleep, focus on regularity and quality of sleep.  Most adults need at least 7 hours of nightly sleep to function and be productive while others need up to 9. Whatever your magic number is, set a regular bedtime that is early enough for you to achieve those hours and commit to them on a nightly basis and wake up at the same time every day.

While the number of hours is important, so is the quality. What you eat and your sleep environment can diminish your sleep quality. Avoid heavy, hard to digest foods and sugary drinks (including alcohol) in the evening. Remove or limit common sleep distractions like TVs, devices, bright and even hot sleeping environment.

Sleep and your body

Healthy sleep keeps your body running like a well-oiled machine. Proper sleep aids the body to maintain healthy body weight, contributes a strong immune system to fight disease and infections such as colds or Type 2 diabetes. Sleep also promotes cellular repair, increases physical performance, reaction time and personal safety keeping you alert to react to your surroundings.

Sleep and your mental wellbeing

Those who prioritize sleep health can make better decisions, are more resilient to emotional rollercoasters, mood swings and have better coping mechanisms. Those lacking quality sleep are prone to feelings of anxiety and depression.

If you’re not convinced by now, proper sleep also keeps your mind as sharp as nails. Sleep increases communication and fosters creativity at work and at school leading to academic and professional success. Long term sleep deprivation on the other hand results in forgetfulness, increased errors and overall poor performance.

If you require professional help to increase your sleep health, speak to your physician. They may have solutions to help pinpoint ongoing problems that prevent you from sleeping well.

Make healthy sleep one of your top priorities for 2019!

Ditch The Night Cap, "Cheers" To Better Sleep!

December 14, 2018

From birthdays and anniversaries to work functions and especially the holidays, it’s rare to celebrate anything without raising a glass.  But how does that sip of champagne or mug of spiked eggnog affect you when it’s time to sleep?

Sure, alcohol makes most of us sleepy - it is, after all, a sedative.  But you might be surprised to know that while a drink or two may relax you, your quality of sleep is going to suffer.  Alcohol has a disruptive effect on sleep; from keeping you from enjoying that deep REM sleep to waking you up because you have to pee (alcohol is a diuretic).
Here’s what you can expect if you have one (or maybe one too many) around bedtime.
Fragmented Sleep.  You may feel relaxed, but your body is still working to process that alcohol through your bloodstream.  So while your eyes may be heavy, your organs are working overtime.
Lighter Sleeping. If you’re a light sleeper, to begin with, you’ll probably wake up feeling pretty unsatisfied.  When there’s alcohol in your system - even a little - your body and brain have trouble falling into a deep sleep.  Instead, you stay in Stage 1 and 2 of sleep (see below);
Stage 1: light sleep - when you can be awoken easily
Stage 2: heart rate and brain waves become slow; the body prepares for sleep
Stage 3: Enter deep sleep
Stage 4: Full-on deep sleep - cell repair
Stage 5: REM sleep (that’s the sweet stuff!)
Dehydration: You may have chugged a whole case of beer but that doesn’t make you the picture of hydration.  Because your body needs to flush out all that alcohol, guess what happens?  You spend the night in the bathroom.  And because of the timing of it, you’ll likely be waking up more when you should be getting into those deep sleep hours, making you feel more like you were hit by a bus come morning.

One last thing…

While 1-2 glasses are fine with dinner, 3-4 glasses are not the best way to get ready for sleep and a terrible habit when it comes to your long-term sleep health.  There’s nothing wrong with a nightcap, but if you want to sleep better cap-it at just 1 or 2.
